Think like a CAD Designer! Pt.2

Course Content

Lesson 3 of 4
02h : 10m

Ingenia Context [5 mins]

5 min Script: Hello, designers! Thanks for your continued work. The Ideal Classroom chart you created in Activity 1 has been very inspirational. And with your skills in CAD I think we’re ready to start designing. One of the most important parts of a classroom is the furniture! We use desks, tables, chairs, and bookshelves every single day. Can you help us design some classroom furniture using Tinkercad? What furniture do you think is most important in a classroom? (wait for student response)

ENGAGE

Introduce the Tinkercad “Redesign Classroom Furniture” Lesson [10 min]

Display the Ideal Classroom chart created in Activity 1. Review the various classroom furniture that your class included in this initial design. Ask:

  • What classroom furniture did we include in our Ideal Classroom?
  • Do we have a good balance of form and function? Why or why not?
  • Looking at it again, do you think there is any furniture missing?
  • Which type of furniture do you want to try designing using Tinkercad? Why?

Display the Tinkercad “Redesign Classroom Furniture” lesson plan. Scroll down and find the Introduction Video in the left column. Watch the Introduction Video with your class: https://www.Tinkercad.com/lessonplans/redesign-classroom-furniture

You can also share the student lesson with students using the following link: https://www.tinkercad.com/lessonplans/redesign-classroom-furniture/share

Invite students to ask clarifying questions before beginning the design process.

EXPLORE

Sketching and 2D design [30 min]

Introduce the concept of thumbnail sketching and drawing a final design on graph paper.

10 min Watch the “Create Thumbnail Sketches” video (Step 6 of the “Redesign Classroom Furniture” Tinkercad lesson).

5 min Gather students together to review how to select an idea and draw the final sketch on graph paper. Display step 7 of the “Redesign Classroom Furniture” Tinkercad lesson for an example.

Distribute the Thumbnail Sketches worksheet and have students sketch as many ideas as they can. Thumbnail Sketches Planning Document (www.tinkercad.com)

15 min Distribute graph paper and have students draw their final design choice. Circulate to support their work and encourage them to include sketches of different perspectives of the item like the top, sides, back, and bottom.

Redesign Classroom Furniture using Tinkercad [80 mins]

Students will use Tinkercad to redesign a piece of classroom furniture based on their 2D design.

Materials: for the class Preparations
- Internet-enabled Device
- Tinkercad Lessons: Develop a Prototype
- Optional: depending on your technology and your students’ familiarity with software, you may consider pairing students for this activity instead of having students work independently.
- Review the Tinkercad Lessons: Develop a Prototype on your own time using the same link given to students.
- Optional: Tinkercad has the ability to generate files for 3D printing. If you have access to a 3D printer, consider printing 3D models of student designs.

10 min Script: Using your 2D sketches, now you will use Tinkercad to create 3D prototypes of your redesigned piece of classroom furniture.

Display the main page of the Tinkercad Lesson: Redesign Classroom Furniture. Navigate to the Develop a Prototype section in the left-hand column. Show students how to click through the 3 sections: Work with Shapes in Tinkercad, Use Tools to Manipulate Shapes, and Create Your Furniture Prototype.

Ask:

  • What questions do you have before we begin?
  • Looking at these instructions, what are you excited to try?
  • Looking at your 2D drawings, how do you think these will translate into 3D designs?

65 min Dismiss students to work on redesigning a piece of classroom furniture.

If students get stuck, you can give the following tips:

If students complete their furniture designs quickly:

  • Challenge them to create another piece of furniture to begin turning their Tinkercad workspace into a prototype of a complete classroom.

5 min Lead a class discussion:

  • What was challenging about using Tinkercad to redesign furniture?
  • What was fun about using Tinkercad?
  • Did the 3D design turn out how you expected? Why or why not?
  • What would you do differently if you had more time to work on your 3D designs in Tinkercad?

Homework [5 mins]

Have students survey their homes to identify an item from their home that they want to redesign. Have them start considering the redesign by first sketching the 2D design. You can consider assigning students to create the 3D design in Tinkercad in this homework assignment or wait until Lesson 4.
